A Peaceful Family
Jul 23, 2024You carry the capacity for peace inside you, always.
A Peaceful Family - During a recent group call, I mentioned how a morning mindfulness practice could make a difference throughout the day. This idea was met with a bit of skepticism 😉
How could a 5-minute morning exercise change things when sh*t hits the fan?!
A Peaceful Family
Here’s a real-life example: A client and her 4-year-old were at a family gathering at a restaurant. Her daughter was tantruming about food, wanting to sit with grandma, and having to wait. You get the idea. She described how she felt:
“My kid is going nuts, my whole family is watching, there are other patrons, it’s raining, so I can’t put her outside, I can’t put her in time out...I’m in panic mode.”
But she didn’t panic. She turned to another adult and said, “I’m going to figure this out, but I just need a second to cool off first.” Then she left the table. When she returned, she picked up her daughter and walked her to the car, saying, “Looks like we need to spend some time alone. We’ll come back when we’re ready.” They returned a few minutes later, and the rest of the meal went great.
Choose Not to Panic
This mom chose not to panic because she remembered she had a choice! A few months ago, she began a mindfulness practice, and every day for three minutes, she proves to herself that she has the capacity for calm within her. Her story has changed from “I can’t calm down” to “I know I can feel calm; I do it every morning!”
This practice doesn’t make you perfect.
Just because you can, doesn’t mean you always will choose calm. You will sometimes choose calm. Eventually, you will usually choose calm. You will calm quickly when you lose your cool. And pretty soon, you’ll be coming to your coaching calls amazed at the peace you’re bringing to parenting that you didn’t know you had inside all along.
